Exposed card in pseudo-squeeze situation ( 15:12:13 TueMay 13 2003 )

Country: International

Ok, this has never actually happened to me, but the thought occurred when reading other posts.

Suppose declarer is playing out his long suit in a pseudo-squeeze situation, and one of the defenders accidentally drops his cards, maybe dropping both his cards at trick 12.

Now his partner will be able to deduce (for certain) what to hold onto.

Would they be able to force the defender to make the wrong discard as he is now playing on unauthorised information. What should the ruling be in this situation?

(Note: I actually only play online where this kind of irregularity never occurs)

Law 57 covers this situation:
When a defender leads to the next trick before partner has played to the current trick, or plays out of turn before partner, declarer may 1) require offender's partner to play his highest card in the suit led, 2) require offender's partner to play his lowest card, or 3) forbid him from playing a card of a specific suit,

I don't think Law 57 applies here - it's the declarer who's leading, according to Earl. Seems to me the applicable law is Law 49 - exposure of defender's cards. The exposed cards become penalty cards, but that doesn't help. TD might invoke Law 72B1, but even without that, it seems to me Law 16A1 applies - which would result in an adjusted score if offender's partner makes a play which could have been suggested by his knowledge of his partner's holding.

If declarer leads, and his RHO plays next, which is one of the possible scenrios, then Law 57 does apply.

But in general there is always a Law to deal with the situation, penalty cards, unauthorised information and so on.
