Svan Response To One Club - GCC ( 10:30:12 SunJun 15 2003 ) Select Action Reply Quote post Report post Last posts Ignore user Global ignore Whisper Country: USA Svan is a Swedish ystem where 1C is either 11-13 balanced or 17+ any shape, and thus doesn't qualify for the 15+ hcp response exemption. The response structure to an opening of one club specifies that all hands with 8+ hcp and a 4 card major respond 1 of a major, even if, say, there a 4 spades and 7 clubs. You only respond 2 of a minor, 1NT, etc. without 4 in a major. The GCC says that a response is natural if it show 4+ in a major. Does this mean a canape response is legal?

For a start canape is not mentioned under 'Disallowed' so it should be allowed. Secondly some players have played canape openings without difficulty. But the final reason to convince me is that if playing Walsh-type resonses a 1 or 1 response to 1 may conceal a much longer suit.
